Public Health Institute

Public Health Institute (PHI) is the annual skill-building conference to improve the ability of the epilepsy network to address the social determinants of epilepsy. Through the Epilepsy Foundation’s collaboration with CDC, this annual conference is hosted with our national partners to help our network address the unmet social needs of the epilepsy community.

With a theme of “Building Inclusive Communities,” each of the past few PHIs have focused on specific social determinants of health (SDOH). These include:

  • Food and housing insecurity
  • Rural health disparities
  • Discrimination
  • Social and civic injustices
  • Police interactions

To increase engagement and collaborations with social service agencies and multi-sector organizations, the Epilepsy Foundation highlights our partnerships with trusted and credible national organizations. These organizations have SDOH expertise in hopes that more of our epilepsy network will establish similar relationships on the local level. These national partners have included Feeding America, National Rural Health Association, and National Digital Inclusion Alliance.

Our current five-year CDC Cooperative Agreement centers on improving epilepsy education, systems of care, and health outcomes through national and community partnerships. To achieve these goals, we must recognize and address the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) - conditions in places where people live, learn, work, and play which affect a wide range of health and quality of life risks and outcomes. In Year 4, we are focusing on Addressing Epilepsy Inequities in Educational Settings.

Conference Objectives

Our conference objectives are:

  • To increase engagement between the network, partners, and stakeholders of the Epilepsy Foundation and the educational workforce, including K-12 personnel, college and university staff, education administrators, and accessibility resource officers, to improve interactions with children and college-aged adults with epilepsy.
